Emergency flood support

Romania is a country that has suffered and continues to suffer from flooding on a large scale over vast open areas that include both urban and rural towns and villages. On several occasion we have helped with clearing and cleaning up in the time of flooding in past years in Bacau County and Iasi County and in also 2010 provided massive support when the northern town of Dorohoi was flooded after a river bank broke open in the night following many days of monsoon like heavy rain.

On arrival for instance in Dorohoi on the evening of the flooding we helped evacuate people from flooded dwellings many of which were filled with up to 1-2 meters of water. The force of the water hitting the old dwellings made of mud bricks, many up to 70 years old was so severe that it blew out windows and simply disintegrated wood bricks and on entry into dwellings turned everything upside down breaking furniture that was in its path. In one dwelling we found a heavy fridge that had simply been washed across a room and was turned on its side, in other dwellings likewise home contents all destroyed and a trail of thick smelly mud and grime everywhere. Animals  and family pets dead in yards and all water wells unable to be used as were infected by flood water. In total 3 people died that first night who were old and unable to get out of their homes when the wall of water hit and hundreds more were on the streets soaking wet with only the clothes on their backs as all else had been lost in the flooding. Not only was there residential damage as also all of the train station goods yard had been flooded also along with many acres of farmland resulting in massive crop losses.

Once the water resided the reality of the disaster could be seen and as well as St RCHF others joined in helping in the clearing up operation that went on for several weeks. Whilst helping clean dwellings that could be saved as many were destined to be demolished on safety grounds St RCHF also made an international appeal and in just 3 days 2 large articulated lorries arrived from Hungary and also help from Cluj with a lorry of emergency aid. The priority was to avert disease and illness as no one had clean water to drink and in the aid lorries was pallets of fresh bottled water which we handed out to those who had lost their homes. Among other aid on the transports was bedding, mattresses and clothing along with furniture which we delivered house by house to those who were able to stay now back at home. St RCHF also via sponsors purchased high quality fully windproof and waterproof tents for the refugee ones who had lost their homes that were demolished and pitched same all in one day working non stop as well as supplying airbeds and a lantern all new and donated free to refugees. These refugees in some cases stayed in tents for at least a full year before replacement dwellings could be built on higher ground for them.

As in Bacau and Iasi the same in Dorohoi as we spent days helping clear water and thick mud from dwellings along with resident and in all this time purchased from donations and delivered food aid and more water. Along with food aid we also delivered freely to refugees hygiene essentials like toilet rolls, soap, shampoo and toothpaste along with toothbrushes. We purchased also many rolls of thick plastic sheeting to cover items from the outside elements as was still poor weather at night outside despite being warm in the daytimes. Buckets, spades and mops were also purchased in bulk so that all could help in the cleaning up operation that is an unenviable dirty job that has to be done.

Among the many refugees was an old lady with her 3 year old grandson in Dorohoi that lost everything they owned not only the house, but all furniture and belongings and we at St RCHF also provided them with a tent, beds and lanterns, plus clothing. We helped make them a shack what used to be their garden to store items in that were recovered as well as aid we gave her in the form of table and chairs and chest of drawers to keep towels and clothing in.

Ukraine refugee support

The unprecedented situation in Ukraine has seen families torn apart, countless deaths and injuries along with whole scale destruction of infrastructure including both residential and industrial along with massive crop losses.

From the start of the invasion into Ukraine territory  there were huge numbers of Ukrainians who fled for their lives, each one suffering extreme trauma and requiring special attention. Imagine that your home, your workplace, the children’s school and all you own is taken away in night bombing raids and even worse you loose family members without being able to say goodbye or bury them properly, such is the terror of war on a civilian population that causes many to flee not even knowing where they are going and with no clear plans, simply to run and get away to save the life.

Many thousands who fled this way came over the border to Romania at checkpoints some in a near state of collapse after walking many days, others with in injuries and all in shock. Others were luckier as came in family cars, but again they didn’t know what was ahead of them only that they had escaped the war in their country. Fright on every face be it a child, adult or senior citizen.

For the many refugees that arrived through Stanca border crossing there was a warm welcome from the Mayor of the local town of Stefanesti and a emergency center where they could wash, have hot food, medical support as well all in complete safety and here St RCHF helps with food aid, toiletries as well as via outside sponsors providing new emergency tents for refugees who were too many to house in the refugee center. Camp beds, sleeping bags and other items were also donated like inflatable air beds along with toys and teddies for children. This war like all others takes a huge human toll as well as placing an imprint that the survivors will hold in their minds all of the life. God be with them all.
