Portable toilets and solar lighting

Lack of modern facilities

The majority of rural Romanian’s lack modern facilities in their dwellings that we all take for granted like piped on tap water and without this basic facility one cannot have a flush toilet. This means that even today the majority of families have no option but to use a home made pit toilet with wood surround at the bottom of the garden as they did over 40 years ago.

What about the sick and infirm ones at home we asked some years ago? How do they manage as many in this category are alone and old as well in their senior years.
St RCHF made visits and found at first hand the difficulties faced by these unfortunate people.
An old woman shaking with cold as she tried to get down icy path in her garden with her walking stick to the outside toilet. A man with no legs trying to get into his wheelchair also to go to the outside toilet and a child who suffers epilepsy being helped by his mother after darkness had fallen to make it outside to the pit toilet.

St RCHF simply could not stand by and we gained sponsorship via our friends at Give Eur-Hope resulting in funding that has allowed us to purchase and deliver hundreds of portable toilets to the most needy of the population in North East Romania over several years now. This ongoing project allows the ones who benefit complete dignity when they have toilet needs daily as we all have.

The portable toilet is simply placed in a suitable and often unused room and a bowl with soap and towel nearby thus hygienic standards are raised in this way also and most important is that the person no longer needs to struggle often in pain to go to the outside toilet.

Likewise St RCHF in recent years has provided hundreds of solar light packs to rural families and people living alone who live in areas where there is no mains electricity. This allows children for instance to do their school home work in suitable conditions rather than risking their health under a smelly candle. The project also stops the danger of a dwelling catching fire as many do in the winter long dark nights when a candle is left unattended and falls over with serious consequences.
